Blogging in Education
Please read the two short articles from NEA Today: "New Kids on the Blog" and "Blogging On."
What are two advantages to blogging?
What is one possible pitfall?
Comments

Blogging allows students to practise writing in an open-ended,computer svelte setting, discuss ideas, and express themselves. It allows students to express themselves anonymously or without having to speak out in class.
Pitfalls for blogging would be the sasme as for all internet use....they might get am inappropriate responce from somewhere outthere, could inadvertantly give out personal info, etc.

I can see one advantage of blogging would be that it alows the students to express themselves without being put on the spot by showing their identity. Another positive would be that teachers could pre-assess students on their knowledge coming into an assignment fairly quickly. This could be achieved by having a short essay question, which could answered quickly by each student. One disadvantage could also be the lack of knowing the identity. The student could be needing help, but the teacher would not know who they were unless the students were coded in. That then would take away the origional purpose. Sort of a 'Catch Twenty-Two" situation.

Two advantages I see are it would motivate students to participate and would be seen as technologically appealing to a wide segment of the population.
One possible pitfall would be liability issues. It is always amazing what someone might deem worthy of suing.

I love the idea. I have an online journal I post a couple of times a month. I would love to make it a Blog, and have comments posted.
Thanks
