Animal Rights Much controversy centers on the dissection of animals in classroom settings. This is especially true when it involves animals we traditionally view as pets (such as cats).

Many web sites are devoted to the abolishment of animal dissections. The following quote seems to capture the general opinion that most have in common:

“What do dissections teach? Not much … except that it’s OK to chop up animals. In California, investigators brought up the possible connection between a series of cat mutilations and the cat dissections at the local high school. That wouldn't surprise us: In his last interview before his death, Jeffrey Dahmer said that he became fascinated with blood and guts when his
school gave him a knife and a dead animal to cut apart in biology class”. Animals In Print

Many students object to the dissection experience on ethical and religious grounds.

I found this quote from a PETA web site to be a strongly worded perspective on the use of animals in dissections:

"Dissection teaches a profound disrespect for the life it purports to study. It fosters conflict and confusion in impressionable young people, and we now know that stimulating any tendency toward cruelty to animals in childhood can correlate with dangerous, antisocial behavior in adulthood. Science itself is often a casualty of dissection, as thoughtful, intelligent, and talented students are repulsed from the study of science by the first gratuitous exercise in cruelty."

The following statistics were of some interest as well:

Poll of High School students at Wright State University:

·33% were bothered by dissection.
·90% felt that they should be allowed to choose
an alternative.
·50% said that given the choice, they would
choose an alternative.
·80% said that teachers should encourage students
to share their feelings about dissection and
that animal rights should be a part of
biology class.

I am extremely interested in your perspective on this issue, especially since you are now veterans of these claimed atrocities. Do not worry about offending me; my concern is not over your position, but how effectively you are able to express it. Remember, others will read your post so be clear, concise, and grammatically accurate. Poor writing reflects a confused mind! Even though this is an opinion paper, it may be beneficial to provide documentation to support your claims. The addition of relevant web links would add to the reader’s insights.

*Typing your Blog in MS Word, then using the cut and paste option will allow you to more effectively save the document, as well as perform grammar and spell checks.
