Football On any other Saturday, the day would be over for the Division III Northwestern College Eagles but on Saturday, October 8th, already having disposed of winless Trinity Bible College 59-0, they should be heading home to their wives, to their girlfriends, and to an afternoon of watching college football from the couch, this is not the case, the Eagles have a doubleheader. A doubleheader in Football? This is unheard of. The idea of a doubleheader came from the Northwestern Athletics Director Matt Hill. While Hill was struggling to find a 10th opponent for the Eagles' 2005 schedule, Macalester College called inquiring about a game on October 8. After consulting with Talley, Northwestern's President, the team's captains and the athletic directors from Trinity and Macalester, Hill decided the Eagles would play two games in one day. He had no idea it had never been done before. He called the NCAA to see if they were in violation of any rules and they replied no but there will be a rule next year. All anybody had to do was look into the coach’s eyes as his team gathered around him following its 47-14 victory over Macalester in game two to know that they achieved more than just two victories; they achieved a family bond no larger than that of their real family.
